Most art exhibits are made for people to observe. But few are made for people to become an actual part of. That’s the idea behind The Salvation Army’s new Cardboard City exhibit. The 20-by-20 exhibit includes five life-size cardboard scenes depicting the situations of real people who have been served by The Salvation Army.

Each scene includes a short story about what is happening, and is set up in a way that allows observers to feel like they are in the story. In one of the scenes, for example, exhibit-goers look out the window of a home and see a law enforcement official coming to the door with an eviction notice. Another scene features a St. Paul man who lived in the woods for 10 years before coming to The Salvation Army, where he found the emotional and financial support he needed to move into an apartment.
